Francois Laso, former student of the Master’s program on Visual Anthropology, call 2011-2013, presents the exhibition "La huella invertida: miradas de José Domingo Laso” at the Museum of the city, in Quito. Francois Laso shows 200 photographs of his grandfather José Domingo, through these pictures she analyzes the role of photography in the early twentieth century society in Quito. She also considers official speeches and the construction of a social memory about a racist matrix in which a modern white city, without indigenous people, is presented. The exhibition will remain open until November 15.
Alberto Acosta, researcher from the Department of Development, Environment and Territory is participating in the International Seminar “Coloniality of power, capitalist financialization and structural violence”. It takes place at the University Ricardo Palma, from the 5th to the 7th October. As part of the topic Latin America and the coloniality of power, Alberto Acosta will participate in the inaugural lecture “financialization of capitalism” with Anibal Quijano.
In the city of Buenos Aires, Luciana Cadahia, research professor from the Department of Sociology and Gender Studies, participates in the international workshop 'Subjects and emancipation in post-Marxism'. The workshop will take place from the 5th to the 6th October. At this meeting, organized by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Buenos Aires as part of the “Cátedra libre Ernesto Laclau”, academics and researchers from Greece, England, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Ecuador participate.
Xavier Andrade, faculty researcher from the Department of Anthropology, History and Humanities will attend, as speaker and co-organizer, to the symposium "Art and anthropology: contemporary challenges for interdisciplinary field work." The IV Congress of the Latin American Anthropology Association will take place in Mexico City from the 7th to the 10th October. In addition, Professor Andrade will present the lecture "Etnograficidad y documental en Ecuador", as part of the Symposium: Documentary cinema in Latin America.
With the invitation of the University of Alcala de Henares, Francisco Carrion Mena, coordinator of the International Academic Relations Department (URAI), participates in the III International Congress of the Ombudsmen of Latin America. As part of the meeting, Ambassador Carrión presented the paper entitled "Colectivos en situación de vulnerabilidad: el caso de los migrantes". Academics, human rights specialists and ombudsmen from the entire region participated to this event.
Rafael Silva Vega, a Ph.D. student in Social Sciences with specialization in Political Studies, call 2012-2015, defended his doctoral dissertation "La noción de libertad en Maquiavelo: las posibilidades de la ciudadanía en sociedades en conflicto". The oral defense jury recommended publishing this dissertation because of its excellent qualities. Javier Zúñiga, professor from Universidad del Valle of Colombia led the research. The jury was composed by Manuel Anselmi from University of Perugia , Raúl Cuadros from Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios of Colombia and David Cortez and Luciana Cadahia from FLACSO Ecuador.
In order to promote teaching projects cooperation and research on issues related to geographical development studies, space and territory and environment-society relations, FLACSO Ecuador and the Friedrich-Universität Erlangen Nümberg-FAU from Germany signed a cooperation agreement. This agreement promotes exchanges of professors and students, conferences, research projects development and mutual dissemination of research results, academic resources and publications. This agreement was signed by Perdita Pohle, president of the Department of Cultural Geography and Development Studies, Mathias Braun, director of the Institute of Geography from FAU and Juan Ponce, director of FLACSO Ecuador.
