  • My scholarship bridges the anthropology of finance, feminist economic anthropology, science and technology studies, information studies and digital anthropology, medical and psychological anthropology, gambling and addiction studies, media studies and visual anthropology, legal anthropology, anthropology of police, and security and carceral studies. My current research project focuses on crypto-currencies, financial pyramids, money laundering, financial crime, family firms, and big data. In addition, I am collaborating with research teams working on climate change, clean energy, and green criminology.

I am also editing my book manuscript entitled, Markets of Excitement: Debt, Speculation, and Catalonia, which investigates how everyday people engage with speculative forms of debt in order to develop their personal and collective projects. My ethnographic material was gathered during nearly three years of fieldwork in Catalonia.

My previous ethnographic work concerned itself with security, criminology, and violence in Ecuador, particularly the prison system, police institutions, and drug-trafficking as well as cocaine and heroin consumption.

I have also done anthropological cinema in the form of documentary film and experimental visual ethnography.

Finally, I’m the co-founder of the Center for Interdisciplinary Ethnography at Universidad de Cuenca & FLACSO.
