Dutch professor considered one of the three best economists in the Netherlands, according to the Economists top 40 list - 2016, published in the Economisch Statistische Berichten (ESB). His research areas revolve around educational policies, education economics, impact evaluation and development economics.
His research covers a wide range of topics in the demand analysis of education, mechanisms of school assignment, efficiency of educational interventions, gender differences in educational options, as well as the long-term effects of class size and behavioral responses.
He obtained his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam, where he received the mention cum laude. He has collaborated in prestigious universities such as Stanford, Cornell and Berkeley. He is currently a researcher at the Institutes Tinbergen and CESifo, and is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Development, Environment and Territory of FLACSO Ecuador.
