Research Master's Programs - Development Economics 2019-2021


Modality: face-to-face


To provide students with the theoretical and methodological foundations needed to carry out impact research in areas related to the main economic, social and environmental problems of development processes, with special emphasis on the Ecuadorian and Latin American reality, which will allow students participate in the construction of public policies in the countries of the region.

Who is it for?

The Master of Research in Development Economics is aimed at students who wish to be trained in the field of economic analysis of development; as well as those who wish to subsequently access a PhD. Due to the contents of the curriculum, most of the students come from disciplines related to Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Business Administration and other branches of the Social Sciences.

Occupational field

  • Teachers and university researchers. One of our main objectives is to support those students who wish to continue their PhD studies at FLACSO or at other prestigious universities.
  • Analysts and researchers in study centers of different national and international organizations.
  • Professionals from the private sector in research areas related to development.
  • Official of international organizations, NGOs, development cooperation agencies or technical cabinets of social organizations.

Curriculum structure

In order to get a Master’s degree, students must complete 64 credits in total, divided in:

  • 12 courses of four credits each with a total of 48 credits
  • A research workshop of twelve credits
  • 4 credits for the production and presentation of the master's thesis.
Class schedule
From Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 09:00. Some courses will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent certification by a duly certified higher education institution.
  • Ability to read and understand texts in English.
  • Have the means to finance the studies and study them with due dedication.
  • Completion of an academic aptitude exam.
  • Pass a preparatory course in economic mathematics.
  • Comply with all the specific requirements of the teaching program to which you apply and those indicated in the 'Application process' section of the online application form.

Entry Process

All applicants will enter a selection process. Through the website:, applicants must complete the application online, attach all required documentation and send it to FLACSO Ecuador. Selected applicants will be interviewed by FLACSO professors.

Stipend scholarships and financial assistance

FLACSO Ecuador has a scholarship and financial assistance policy for students admitted into its Master's programs. The policy is shaped by criteria of academic performance and by the socio-economic situation of the applicants.
