One of the great figures of social research on agrarian change in Latin America. Specialist in theories of economic and social development and in theories on the agrarian and peasant question. Author of numerous books, he has published more than 60 chapters in anthologies, more than 100 articles in scientific journals and more than 40 reviews of academic books.
He has been a professor at universities in Chile, Ecuador, Great Britain, Holland and Peru; and honorary member of institutions and professional associations of England, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, among others.
He obtained his PhD in Development Studies from the University of Sussex, England. He is currently professor emeritus of the Department of Development, Environment and Territory of FLACSO Ecuador, member of the international advisory board of about 10 academic journals and co-editor of the Journal of Agrarian Change (Wiley-Blackwell, Oxford).
