Research Master's Programs - Urban Studies 2016-2018

The master´s aims to train researchers capable of producing scientific knowledge in the field of studies of the city. The acquisition of theoretical and methodological tools to understand and explain the urban problems from a multidimensional character is prioritized. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the objective is contribute to scientific research of urban processes in Ecuador and Latin America.

Who is it for?

The master´s is focused to professionals from different academic disciplines interested in specializing and develop their own interests, in the field of research and teaching of urban issues and management related areas of the city.

Curriculum structure

In order to get a Master’s degree, students must complete 64 credits in total, divided in:

  • 12 courses of four credits each with a total of 48 credits
  • A research workshop of twelve credits
  • 4 credits for the production and presentation of the master's thesis.
Class schedule
From Monday to Thursday, 17h00-20h00. Some courses take place from 07h00 to 09h00.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent certification by a duly certified higher education institution.
  • Grades in previous university studies that average at least 80% of the maximum grade of that institution’s scale.
  • Exclusive dedication of at least five hours daily to the teaching program.
  • Completion of an academic aptitude exam.
  • Proven ability to read and understand texts in English.

Entry Process

All applicants must complete an online form and attach all the required documents. The cost of the application is 30 USD. All applications will be submitted to the corresponding program’s selection process. Selected applicants will be interviewed by FLACSO professors.


FLACSO Ecuador has a scholarship and financial assistance policy for students admitted into its Master's programs. The policy is shaped by criteria of academic performance and by the socio-economic situation of the applicants.
