Research Master's Programs - Socio-environmental Studies 2016-2018

Through teaching and research, the Master of Research in Social and Environmental Studies aims to increase a deepest analysis and technical effectiveness in all decision-making procedures (public, private, social movements, organizations, etc.) which include design, planning, organization, management and evaluation of policies and interventions that require a complex understanding of the relationship between humans and nature. It also seeks to train professors and researchers.

Who is it for?

To professionals from hard sciences, social sciences, humanities, environmental engineering, forestry or agriculture, exercising or wanting to exercise executive functions in the State (at all levels), private companies, NGOs and universities in order to influence local, regional and global environmental governance.

Curriculum structure

In order to get a Master’s degree, students must complete 64 credits in total, divided in:

  • 12 courses of four credits each with a total of 48 credits
  • A research workshop of twelve credits
  • 4 credits for the production and presentation of the master's thesis.

From Monday to Thursday, 17h00-20h00. Some courses take place from 07h00 to 09h00.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent certification by a duly certified higher education institution.
  • Grades in previous university studies that average at least 80% of the maximum grade of that institution’s scale.
  • Exclusive dedication of at least five hours daily to the teaching program.
  • Completion of an academic aptitude exam.
  • Proven ability to read and understand texts in English.

Entry Process

All applicants must complete an online form and attach all the required documents. The cost of the application is 30 USD. All applications will be submitted to the corresponding program’s selection process. Selected applicants will be interviewed by FLACSO professors.


FLACSO Ecuador has a scholarship and financial assistance policy for students admitted into its Master's programs. The policy is shaped by criteria of academic performance and by the socio-economic situation of the applicants.
