Research Master's Programs - Development Economics 2016-2018


To train professionals with a critical view of a development model applied to the last decades in Ecuador and Latin America through the study of methodological and theoretical statements of Development Economics with special emphasis on Ecological Economics and Political Economics in order to be capable of participate in the construction of economic, political and environmental policies in regional countries.

Who is it for?

Master`s in Development Economics is addressed to people with education on the following fields of study: Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Management and other relates areas of the Social Sciences. The program has special interest on developing research and teaching skills in order to help students to be capable of solve economic, social, environmental and institutional problems linked to development models in Latin American countries.

Curriculum structure

In order to get a Master’s degree, students must complete 64 credits in total, divided in:

  • 12 courses of four credits each with a total of 48 credits
  • A research workshop of twelve credits
  • 4 credits for the production and presentation of the master's thesis.
Class schedule
From Monday to Thursday, 17h00-20h00. Some courses take place from 07h00 to 09h00.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent certification by a duly certified higher education institution.
  • Grades in previous university studies that average at least 80% of the maximum grade of that institution’s scale.
  • Exclusive dedication of at least five hours daily to the teaching program.
  • Completion of an academic aptitude exam.
  • Proven ability to read and understand texts in English.  
  • To approve a course pre university of economics mathematics.

Entry Process

All applicants must complete an online form and attach all the required documents. The cost of the application is 30 USD. All applications will be submitted to the corresponding program’s selection process. Selected applicants will be interviewed by FLACSO professors.

Scholarships, financial support and student loans

FLACSO Ecuador has a scholarship and financial assistance policy for students admitted into its Master's programs. The policy is shaped by criteria of academic performance and by the socio-economic situation of the applicants. The financial support policy offers the following opportunities:

  • Excellence scholarships for national and foreign students.
  • Scholarships for students coming from other provinces and/or persons with disabilities and/or historically excluded groups.
  • Discounts up to 100% off tuition.
  • Student loans.

Thesis research funing

FLACSO Ecuador holds a regular competition to finance the best thesis projects presented by students from the institution’s diverse programs. The criteria used to assign this research scholarship are the academic performance of the applicants in their postgraduate studies and the quality of their research project. This financing applies only for thesis projects that have been formally accepted by the teaching programs in the corresponding academic cycle.
